The University holds a strong position as the leading first-preference university for school leavers starting tertiary education in New South Wales. That level of demand has enabled the University to attract high-achieving students – 43 per cent of first-year applicants receiving offers from the University in 2006 had a UAI of at least 95.
A diverse student population is encouraged at the University of Sydney. A robust program of merit scholarships and financial support for undergraduate students in need provided over $6.5 million in 2006, which is by far the most comprehensive and generous scheme of any university in New South Wales.
Programs of study are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they are academically challenging and professionally relevant. The University offers 1088 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas across 17 faculties. Eighty-one new courses were approved for commencement in 2006.
