Sir Charles MacKerras
Sir Charles MacKerras, graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University on Tuesday 23 September. The occasion will be marked by a ceremony and formal dinner.
Sir Charles was principal oboist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 1943 to 1946. He received a CBE in 1974 and was knighted for his services to music in 1979. In 1996 he received a Medal of Merit from the Czech Republic, and he was recently made a Companion of the Order of Australia.
He presently holds guest conductor roles with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Welsh National Opera, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera.
His great grandfather was Henry Normand MacLaurin, former chancellor and vice-chancellor of the University.
