With tens of thousands of people moving to Sydney each year, Australia's most densely populated city is experiencing both urban consolidation and urban sprawl, making sustainable transport an increasingly important social, political and economic issue. Coordinated by The Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering, this forum was designed to address topical transport issues from a practical perspective. Speakers included Ken Dobinson, Dobinson & Associates; Mitsuru Konishi, Toyota Motor Corporation; John Stanley, Bus Association Victoria; David Hensher, Institute of Transport Studies; David Thorp, NSW Treasury; and Professor Yoshitsugu Hayashi, School of Environmental Studies Nagoya University. Topics for exploration included finance and the partnership between private and government service providers, institutional structure and strategic planning, land use and transport planning, and new transport technologies.
