Australia is undergoing a historic transition to an ageing society and, while not a crisis, population ageing does require constructive planning to improve outcomes for people of all ages. This forum provided integrated multidisciplinary perspectives on how education and research can contribute to improving the personal and societal experiences of ageing. Researchers, educators and policy makers addressed how multidisciplinary efforts in ageing are carried out, linkages between education and research, and linkages between universities, communities and governments. The forum featured a keynote address by Professor Gloria Gutman, President of the International Association of Gerontology, on 'International Directions in Gerontology Education'.
