I have lived all my life in Sydney so
not surprisingly I have ended up studying, researching and hanging about
at the University of Sydney. However, what is surprising is that I did
a degree in Agricultural Science never having lived near a farm throughout
my life. During this degree I learnt about a new approach to farming called
Precision Agriculture, and now spend my weekdays pondering how cotton farms
can be improved by adopting some of these new techniques.
My work is kindly funded by the Cotton
Research and Development Corporation with the
main project aim being the "Development of a decision-support system for
the site-specific application of fertiliser in Australian cotton fields."
The field work for this study is being carried out in the major cotton
growing regions of Narrabri and Moree, 500 - 600 kilometres north-west
of Sydney. Valuable assistance for this project is being provided by the
researchers at the Australian
Cotton Cooperative Research Centre and Incitec
Fertilisers. Anyone with an interest in this field from researchers
to farmers, please e-mail any questions or suggestions regardingthis research.
A summary of this research can be found in the articles section of this website titled The Potential For Variable-Rate Fertiliser Application In Cotton.
