An International Perspective
Angela Indirawati Simatupang (MCom ‘03)

Angela Simatupang
Only four years after completing her Master of Commerce at The University of Sydney, Jakarta-born Angela Simatupang is a Senior Manager at one of the largest accounting firms in Indonesia, RSM AAJ Associates.

When asked why she chose to undertake her Master of Commerce in International Business and Management of Technology, Simatupang explains that she not only wanted to broaden her view on management and business, but found a post graduate degree an essential quality in seeking employment in a competitive Indonesian workforce. In choosing The University of Sydney, she saw that international experience, and a degree from a “reputable university” would also give her advantage over others in her field.

She says that she enjoyed the multicultural nature of the University and made many friends from around the world. Simatupang also found that the lecturers were particularly understanding the difficulties international students face and found them supportive during her studies.

Following her graduation, Simatupang has been involved in designing the first pension governance manual for pension fund institution in Indonesia, has been promoted three times at RSM and has become a member in developing the 2006 Indonesian Code of Corporate Governance. This startling rise in only four years is largely, she says, due to the experience she had at University.

“During my Masters study at the University of Sydney, I have learned a great deal about how to express opinions, conduct extensive research, perform analysis and actively challenge, solve and generate ideas.
It has also drawn me to a conclusion that what is needed to survive and excel is the motivation inside each person, and the drive to give the best you can… what is needed is the inner strength that lies in each individual and the willingness to continuously learn.”

In the future Simatupang hopes to be able to help in promoting the importance of good governance both in business and the public sector in Indonesia. More personally she says, “my hope is to be able to send my children to study at Sydney University.”
