Conservatorium Singer using her music to give back to the community
Mrs Jean Sheehy (DipMus ‘41)

Jean Sheehy
Mrs Jean Sheehy has been widely recognised as a talented contralto and teacher, and is also a benefactor and volunteer for numerous arts, community and sports organisations. In 2002 she was awarded an OAM for her volunteer work and on Christmas Eve 2006 she turned 90 years old.

Born and raised in Ashfield, Jean Arantz was awarded the Layman Martin Harrison Scholarship to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from 1936 to 1943. She graduated with a Diploma in Singing (Teaching and Performance) in 1941.

In 1943 she became a cast member of the Colgate Palmolive Radio Unit “Calling the Stars” and throughout the following years, performed many times at the Sydney Conservatorium as both soloist and member of The Music Makers Trio. Following her marriage to Dr John Sheehy in 1946, Mrs Sheehy became a receptionist for her husband’s General Practice based in their home for more than 52 years. Her kindness and support for the patients was well known and the practice widely respected.

Throughout World War II, Mrs Sheehy donated the income from her public singing performances to support the war effort. She contributed to more than ten different organisations and performed at hospitals in and around Sydney.

Mrs Sheehy was a foundation member of the Johnsman’s Association Ladies Group from 1964-73 which was set up to assist the restoration of St John’s College within the University of Sydney. She was the secretary and subsequently president of the group and made a significant contribution to its current standing today.

Other contributions made in partnership with Dr Sheehy include volunteering for and supporting: Opera Australia; Rosehill Women’s Bowling Club; St Stanislaus’ College, Bathurst; and providing the trophy for St Patrick’s College, Strathfield.
