Over 110 alumni and guests were entertained and encouraged by The University of Sydney’s Dean of Law Professor Ron McCallum’s presentation “My Life and the Law” at the Graduate Connections Breakfast, held on Wednesday 29 March at the QVB Tearoom.
Becoming visually impaired in his pre-teen years, Professor Ron McCallum spoke of his unique methods and pathways at becoming an expert in industrial relations law and law academia.
Professor McCallum spoke of the tremendous positive impacts that have occurred from the development of information technologies for all people, particularly the visually impaired. From his undergraduate days of writing essays ‘off the top of his head’ or asking friends and family to read ‘boring’ text to now having software that scans and instantly converts the information to voice, the opportunities for the visually impaired are exciting.
Professor McCallum then spoke of the new developments in the Law Faculty including the capital campaign for the new purpose-built Law Building on Eastern Avenue of the main Camperdown campus, offering Law undergraduates the opportunity to experience USYD campus life and the interdisciplinary benefits this will bring. Meanwhile, the Philip Street Sydney building will continue to be used for postgraduate students and their alumni engagement activities.
Professor Richmond Jeremy (MBBS ’79, PhD Med ’89) will present the exciting discoveries of “Bio3 – Where Business, Medicine and Research Interesect” at the next Graduate Connections Breakfast on Wednesday 7 June 2006 at the QVB Tearoom.
