A group of 25 alumni relived highlights of their student days - from the stress of writing exams in the Great Hall to the pride of graduation - when they took part in the first heritage tour of the Quadrangle and immediate surrounds designed exclusively for alumni on Sunday 18 May.
Led by Senior Museums Education Officer Amanda Dusting, the tour covered much of the architectural and historical aspects of the Quad, an impromptu organ demonstration in the Great Hall by University organist Amy Johansen and an opportunity to chat and mingle over delicious refreshments in the Refectory after the tour.
For Greg and Mary Holloway (both BA and DipSocStud '70) the tour reminded them of where their romance first blossomed, while for Dr Charles Badham (MBBS '44), it was an opportunity to be photographed in the Great Hall beneath the 1875 portrait of his great-grandfather, also Charles Badham, the University's second Professor of Classics and Ethics (1867-1883).
As for Roger Bayliss (BSc '65) and his wife Julie (BEc '68), they could not resist the temptation to take a photograph of Roger on the very spot where he was snapped on his graduation day - and Julie used some clever manipulation to produce the photograph shown here.
"Oh, to turn back the clock and be so young and thin again!" said Roger after the tour. "But then again, I am having a lot of fun now, too!"
So apparently did all the other participants, who rated the tour excellent and hope to come back for more. Judging from this response, we will definitely be organising a range of heritage tours in the future. And do check the website, SAM and your emails for details of events for alumni coming up at the Nicholson Museum on July 24 and the Art Gallery on October 23.
