BETH 5000 - Core Concepts in Bioethics

This unit of study provides a broad overview of bioethics. It begins by introducing the history of the discipline and reviewing the major theoretical and disciplinary approaches to bioethics. We then introduce the central topics of bioethical debate and the primary arguments employed in discussions of these topics. In addition to classical cases and traditional perspectives, emerging topics and alternative perspectives are explored. We examine ethical issues associated with core bioethical debates, including doctor-patient relationships, privacy/confidentiality, issues of life and death and distribution of health care resources, as well as dilemmas in emerging areas. The unit concludes with socio-political critique(s) of the discipline of bioethics itself. Learning activities include lectures, in-class discussions, online learning activities and essays.
