Units of study
Units of study offered through the Bioethics Program can be taken by students enrolled at the University of Sydney in postgraduate degree programs other than bioethics, students pursuing degrees at other universities, and students not currently enrolled in a degree program (including those who do not intend to enroll in such a program). Some units of study are only available to students during Honours year.
Core Unit of Study
This unit provides a general overview of the field of Bioethics.
Foundational Units of Study

- BETH 5102 Philosophy of Medicine
- BETH 5103 Biomedicine and Society
- BETH 5104 Bioethics, Law and Society
These units provide interdisciplinary grounding in relevant fields of study.
Elective Units of Study
- BETH 5201 Ethics and Biotechnology: Genes and Stem Cells
- BETH 5202 Human and Animal Research Ethics
- BETH 5203 Ethics and Public Health
- BETH 5204 Clinical Ethics
- BETH 5205 Ethics and Mental Health
These units provide in-depth learning in areas of special areas of importance in Bioethics.
Research Project Units of Study
These units involve directed research and the writing of a thesis on a topic of special interest to the student. They are only available to students enrolled in the Master of Bioethics (Honours) degree. Completion of these units provides experience required for further postgraduate study (i.e. Ph.D.).
