A History of Jewish Prayer

THE COURSE WILL COVER:

  • The Nature of Prayer.
  • Prayer in Ancient Israel.
  • The Origin of the Bet Knesset
  • The relationship between the Synagogue and the Temple Service.
  • The Order of our prayers and the composition of the Siddur.
  • The structure of the service, including the Shema and the Amidah.
  • Weekday, Sabbath and Festival prayers.
  • Prayer in contemporary society; e.g. Women & Prayer/Does God hear our prayers?

MANDELBAUM CERTIFICATE IN JEWISH STUDIES

The Mandelbaum Certificate in Jewish Studies is a University of Sydney-recognised Certificate, awarded on completion of four, one semester courses at Mandelbaum House. A successful completion of the Certificate makes up 50% of the credits required for a University of Sydney’s Undergraduate Diploma in Arts.  These courses are designed for undergraduates or graduates, and can also be taken for general interest, independent of assessments.




 
 

The 2009 Mandelbaum Scholar in Residence will be Professor Dalia Ofer.

 

Prof. Ofer is the Max and Rita Haber Professor of Holocaust Studies at the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She served seven years as the Head of the Vidal Sassoon International Centre for the Study of Antisemitism, and has lectured both in Israel and at many universities in the United States, including Yale, Harvard and Columbia.

During her stay at Mandelbaum House in March and April 2009, she will present a series on "Developments in the Role of Women in Judaism".

Previous scholars have included Lord Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits, Professor Ilan Troen, Rabbi Dr Norman Solomon, Professor Gary Rendsburg, Professor Gideon Shimoni, Professor Youde Fu and Prof. Ze'ev Mankowitz.
