China's Jinkun Theatre Group will present a free Chinese opera workshop on 30 September.
The workshop topics include:
1)Percussion
Percussion is extremely important in Chinese opera performance. A percussion ensemble comprises a drummer (conductor), a big gong player, a cymbal player and a small gong player. In this workshop, participants will learn how to play these
instruments and collectively produce some rhythmic patterns under the drummer’s direction.
2) Bazi
Bazi is the term for all weapons in Peking Opera and Kunqu. In this workshop participants will learn how to use a spear as well as simple combat techniques.
3) Stage movement
In this session, participants will learn movements and techniques such as walking and hand gestures.

The Confucius Institute and the School of Languages are presenting a free Chinese Kunqu opera concert performed by the Jingkun Theatre Group. The ensemble comprises of seven outstanding performers from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shandong.
Kungu is one of the most venerable and highly appreciated forms of Chinese opera, famous for its lyrical texts and its seamless co-ordination of song, dance and movement.
We invite you and your family to join us for this unique and fascinating cultural experience.

Feng shui geomancy, the technique of arranging objects to achieve your goals, has developed world-wide popularity, but in the West only a small part of the traditional Chinese theory is used. Dr Michael Paton, an expert in Chinese history and the philosophy of science, will explain the foundations of this influential Chinese cultural practice, as well as examining some of the misconceptions that have arisen in the West concerning this ancient art.
