Organised in cooperation with the Alumni Relations
Office, the University of Sydney Annual Alumni Reception has been a major event
on the alumni calendar. Each year, a distinguished graduate has been invited to
be Guest of Honour at the Reception and has received a commemorative testamur.
Recent Guests of Honour include Her Excellency, Professor
Marie Bashir AC (2002), the Hon Justice Kim Santow OAM (2003), the Hon Justice
James Spigelman AC (2004), Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore MP (2005), Mr Bruce
Beresford (2006), and Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Michael
L'Estrange, AO. The Convocation Medal and the Alumni Awards for Achievement
in Community Service have also been presented at the Reception. Details on previous
award winners are available on the awards page. The 2008 Alumni Reception was held in MacLaurin Hall
from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday 05 September and was well attended with in excess
of 200 guests. Guest speaker Dr Anne Summers AO (PhDArts '79), presented
a brief talk entitled "Women of the 21st Century". Dr Michael Spence,
Vice-Chancellor and Principal, presented the Alumni Awards and the Convocation
Medal. Live entertainment was provided by a quartet of jazz musicians from
the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The reception featured
the presentation of the annual Convocation
Medal and Alumni Awards for Community Service. The
Convocation Medal was presented to Andrew McLeod BSc(Adv) (Hons I M) 08. The
winners of the Alumni Awards for Community Service were Associate Professor Ross
H Steele AM (BA 60), Professor Charles D MacKenzie (BSc(Vet) 69 BVetSc
71 PhDVetSc 76), Professor Creswell John Eastman (MBBS 65 MD
80), and Mr Andrew Tanner (Bcom 04 BE(Mech 04). The 2007 Alumni
Reception was held in MacLaurin Hall at 6:00pm on Friday 28 September. Almost
