Over 30 members of the Alumni Council and guests
gathered at a formal luncheon in the historic Darlington Boardroom in the Institute
Building on Friday 06 June to farewell Professor Gavin Brown AO. Professor Brown
retired from the position of Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of
Sydney on 10 July 2008.

of the Alumni Council Dr Barry Catchlove praised Professor
Brown for his tremendous achievements during his time as Vice-Chancellor. He also
thanked him for his support of the Alumni Council in his 12 year term as Vice-Chancellor,
particularly in recent years in assisting in raising the profile of the Council
to the University's peak alumni body. In his reply, Professor Brown
thanked Council members for their highly valued voluntary contributions to the
University. He also thanked Ms Bowman, Ms Beck, Dr Catchlove and Dr Thomas for
their individual contributions over the years. He noted the importance of "friend-raising"
and the separation of fundraising from alumni engagement.

Dr Catchlove
presented Professor Brown with a framed copy of the Charter of the University
of Sydney as a gift from the Alumni Council and the Alumni Relations Office. In
August, Professor Brown takes up the position as the Inaugural Director of the
Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus). Based in Adelaide, the Royal Institution
of Australia will be the first international analogue of the Royal Institution
of Great Britain (RiGB), having close links with that illustrious body.
