George Symons graduated with a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney in 1983. In the early 1990's he renewed a close association with the University, being elected a member of the Standing Committee of Convocation (now Alumni Council), and has remained a member of this body until the present.

George was a member of the Executive of the Standing Committee from 1994 to 2002. He was elected Deputy President in 1996, and President from 1997-1999. He was co-editor of the University Sesquicentenary Art Book, and organiser of the Australian Universities Alumni Council (AUAC) annual Conference in 2002, held at the University of Sydney. George was elected to the Executive of AUAC, and held the position of Vice President in the years 2002 and 2003. He was the designer and developer of the former website for the Standing Committee of Convocation and the AUAC website.
