Super-size your career
This combined ‘right of practice' degree allows you to become an accredited exercise scientist and accredited nutritionist or accredited practising dietitian with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) in five years. The exercise and sport science program is taught by the Faculty of Health Sciences; the master's component in nutrition and dietetics is run by the Faculty of Science.
Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand
The program will enable you to design effective exercise and nutrition programs for healthy individuals, elite athletes and people with a disability or with lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, diabetes or hypertension.
A food coach
Dieticians coach people to meet specific goals and provide advice on a healthy balanced diet, weight loss (or gain), food allergies or intolerances, as well as conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and digestive problems.
Practical benefits
Human nutrition has come to involve all the effects on humans of any component found in food. Food choice impacts on most chronic degenerative diseases, mental function, athletic performance, resistance to infection, and foetal health and development. Your training in nutrition will give you the ability to translate scientific information about nutrition into practical information about what people should eat, while your background in exercise and physical activity will allow you to promote a suitably active lifestyle.
Choose your destination
Because of the breadth of the combined degree you will find graduates working in such varied places as hospitals, rehabilitation units, public health, the health and fitness industry, corporate health, private practice, the food industry, research and technology, education and medical insurance.
At the cutting edge
Students studying this combined degree at the University of Sydney have access to scientists and researchers at the cutting edge of nutrition, exercise physiology, biomechanics and medical research. Students will be exposed to the latest technological developments and research advancements in these fields.
Clinical and professional fieldwork
A number of Clinical and professional fieldwork opportunities are scheduled as part of your course. This will give you the hands on experience with real clients in a supervised environment to allow you to combine the academic sections of your course with the practical abilities required of the dietician profession. Some of the clinical and professional fieldwork sites that students have attended previously include:
- Australian Sports Commission
- Holsworthy Barracks, IHSB Hospital
- Nepean Hospital
- NSW Fire Brigade, Health & Fitness Medical Division
- Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
- Royal Rehabilitation Centre, Ryde
- Surf Life Saving Australia
- Sydney Swans
There are a number of essential requirements that students need to prepare for before attending any site for clinical and professional fieldwork. Further information on these and more is available at our Clinical & Professional Fieldwork website.
