The Master of Brain and Mind Sciences strongly promotes interdisciplinary research and broadening the scope of investigation to address disease areas of the brain and mind rather than disparate biomedical disciplines.
Traditionally research has been divided into a series of distinct departmental specialties, but as science has advanced it has become clear that the study of human biology and behaviour is fragmented and the traditional divisions within health research may be a barrier to the progress of scientific discovery. The further advancement of research into the amelioration of disorders of the brain and mind can only be optimally achieved in a model that acknowledges the integral link between the laboratory, clinical research and its application in real clinical situations. Students will be required to undertake four core units of study that will ground them in an understanding of the link between basic neuroscience and clinical applications and interventions. This focus on translational research will provide students with a broader application of their discipline and opportunity for collaboration and improved research outcomes. Elective units of study and the research dissertation will then provide a high standard of specialised training in the students chosen area with learning of current research methodologies, access to cutting edge scientific research equipment and supervision by high profile researchers. The program draws on the strengths of the Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI) to assist students in their professional and clinical skill development and the BMRI will seek to accredit this program with relevant professional bodies. The program provides specialised training of qualified students and workforces which will equip them with a valuable understanding of interdisciplinary research, open opportunities for future research collaborations, as well as refining specific skills and methodology in mental health research and clinical service provision.
