A critical diagnostic link
Diagnostic radiographers use various technologies to translate doctors' requests into images that can help provide an accurate diagnosis.

Local Student Enquiries        International Student Enquiries       Faculty of Health Sciences

The diagnostic radiographer has the skills and knowledge to produce medical images and critically analyse the images and data generated. In the radiology department, the diagnostic radiographer will usually work with the radiologist. Elsewhere, they may work with a range of medical specialists in a variety of areas.

Equipment can range from small mobile X-ray machines to larger units, such as MRI and CT scanners that cost millions of dollars, with all equipment requiring a high level of skill to operate. Although diagnostic radiographers work very closely with technology, it is important to have strong interpersonal skills to establish a rapport with a patient in a short period of time.

Clinical & professional fieldwork
A number of clinical and professional fieldwork opportunities are scheduled as part of your course. This will give you the hands on experience with real clients in a supervised environment to allow you to combine the academic sections of your course with the practical abilities required of the diagnostic radiography profession. Some of the clinical and professional fieldwork sites that students have attended previously include:

  • Bankstown/Lidcombe Hospital
  • Cairns Base Hospital
  • Lismore Base Hospital
  • North Shore Radiology
  • Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
  • St Vincent's Public Hospital
  • Symbion, Nepean Private
  • Ultrascan, Auburn

There are a number of essential requirements that students need to prepare for before attending any site for clinical and professional fieldwork. Further information on these and more is available at our Clinical & Professional Fieldwork website.

Commonwealth Supported Places
The Faculty has a number of Commonwealth Supported Places available for this program. These places offer a considerable reduction in fees and are awarded to applicants who rank highest in their Grade Point Average. You will be notified with your offer if you qualify for a Commonwealth Supported Place.
