The Master of Medical Physics (MMedPhys) is an entry level qualification that trainee medical physicists have as physical scientists who apply their knowledge and training in many different areas of medicine including the treatment of cancer, medical imaging, physiological monitoring and medical electronics.
Both the Graduate Diploma of Medical Physics and Master of Medical Physics are accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM). Graduates of these courses will qualify to apply for trainee medical physicists positions in hospitals in Australia and New Zealand.
Medical physicists employed in hospitals often undertake research studies for the higher Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research degree.
The Institute of Medical Physics within the School of Physics in the University of Sydney offers students a wide variety of coursework units of study in radiation physics, radiation dosimetry, anatomy and physiology, instrumentation, radiotherapy physics, medical imaging physics, image processing, radiation biology and health physics and research methodology. Higher research degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MSc) are also available through the Institute of Medical Physics.
Advantages of undertaking the courses offered through the Institute of Medical Physics and based in the first university physics school in Australia include the utilisation of experienced teaching staff and excellent facilities within university teaching hospitals in the greater Sydney environment.
Students should expect to gain knowledge and skills enabling them to find employment in the areas of medical physics applied to the treatment of cancer, medical imaging, physiological monitoring and medical electronics.
