The Master of Surgery (by coursework) aims to provide an understanding of the principles of applying the best available research evidence to patient care and the skills required for clinical research.

The Master of Surgery by a combination of research and coursework enables surgical trainees to complete their postgraduate degree in a minimum of 1 year of full time study or 2 years part-time.

Course completion requirements

Total number of credit points required for Master of Surgery is 48. The course is divided into three parts. The first part comprises a core unit of study which is compulsory. The second part allows the candidate to choose 4 from 9 primary elective units of study including those related to the various specialties within surgery. For a list of all units please see the Medicine Handbook (link below) or the Discipline of Surgery website http://www.surgery.usyd.edu.au/postgraduate/coursework/index.php. The third part is a research dissertation on one of the specialty streams listed below. The dissertation is compulsory and requires enrolment in two units of study designated Dissertation A and Dissertation B.

The degree will be offered in the following streams: Endocrine Surgery, Colorectal, Hand Surgery, Head & Neck, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatric Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Endovascular Surgery. Students will complete a research dissertation in their specialty area.

The body of knowledge obtained by graduates will complement the practical experience that advanced trainees in surgery receive in teaching hospitals through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons training program.
