Broadway Scheme 2010
Domestic UAC applicants who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage may apply to the Broadway Scheme, the University of Sydney's Educational Access Scheme (EAS) co-ordinated by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).
The scheme is mainly intended for current-year Australian Year 12 students who expect to receive an ATAR (or equivalent).
To be eligible for consideration you will be required to demonstrate that your educational performance during Year 11 and/or Year 12 (or equivalent) has been seriously affected by circumstances beyond your control.
Applying to the Broadway Scheme
- NSW Year 12 students - Your school will receive EAS application packs with the UAC Guides by mid-August 2009. Check with your school's Careers Advisor.
- Interstate Year 12 students - Your school receives a sample EAS pack for information. You can either download from mid-August 2009 the application material from UAC or contact UAC and request an application pack be sent to you by mail from mid-August 2009 (no charge).
- Other applicants - You can either download from mid-August 2009 the application material from UAC or contact UAC and request an application pack be sent to you by mail from mid-August 2009 (no charge). Alternatively you can collect an EAS pack from Student Centres of the participating UAC universities from mid-August 2009.
- On-time applications close at UAC on 30 September 2009. Late applications can be submitted to UAC up to 30 November 2009. No late direct EAS applications will be considered by the University of Sydney.
How the Broadway Scheme works
The University allocates approximately 500 new student places for Broadway Scheme applicants. These places are available in a band of ATAR scores running down to five ranks below the published ATAR cut-off. The maximum effective ATAR bonus under the scheme is five.
Not all UAC courses are open under the scheme (see below) and in some cases, the number of Broadway places for a particular course is exhausted well before the maximum differential (five ATAR ranks) is reached.
Some examples of this from the Main Round of UAC offers in January 2009 were:
| Course | ATAR Cut-off | Broadway Cut-off | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combined Law | 99.55 | 97.55 | 2.00 |
| Commerce (Liberal Studies) | 98.45 | 95.35 | 3.10 |
| Veterinary Science | 98.40 | 96.70 | 1.70 |
| Physiotherapy | 97.00 | 94.75 | 2.25 |
In the majority of courses, however, approved Broadway applicants can expect that the full five ATAR rank differential will apply.
Broadway approved courses
All University of Sydney courses (51xxxx) available to UAC applicants for 2010 will have an allocation of Broadway places, except the following:
- 511216 B Arts (Advanced)(Honours)
- 511795 B Computer Sciene & Technology
- 511913 B Arts/M Nursing
- 511914 B Science/M Nursing
- 511916 B Health Sciences/M Nursing
- 512041 B Science (Advanced)

The list is subject to review and will be finalised in December 2009.
Broadway advice emails
If you made an EAS application in 2009 and have at least one University of Sydney course in your current UAC course preferences, the University will send you an email (to your UAC-recorded email address) on Friday 18 December 2009. The email will advise you of the University of Sydney's decision on your Broadway eligibility. Should you be advised that you are Broadway-approved, you will be able to use this information when finalising your UAC course preferences for the Main Round of UAC offers.
A note about your email account
Some email accounts (eg hotmail, gmail, etc) could place emails from the University into a junk folder. Most email accounts allow users to add names or domains to a safe list. Make sure you add the domain usyd.edu.au to your list of safe email contacts.
Early February Round and Final Round Broadway offers
Almost all of the University's UAC offers under the Broadway Scheme are made in the Main Round of offers. A very small number may be made in the Early February Round (and the Final Round) if the Broadway quota is not filled following Main Round acceptances. You cannot rely on Broadway places being available for any University of Sydney course in the Early February and/or Final Rounds of offers.
Mid-Year UAC Offers
No Broadway places are reserved for Mid-Year UAC admissions.
Broadway approval lifespan
Broadway approval is valid only for the current admissions session. Once you enter university, the benefit you possibly gained with Broadway-approval is exhausted. If you do not start university straightaway, and wish to be considered under the scheme in next year's intake, you will need to re-apply for EAS with UAC. However, if you elect to defer your place (having used your Broadway advantage to gain entry) you will not need to reapply for EAS. This applies only to the course you choose to defer.
Alternatives to Broadway
Broadway applicants should also consider the University's Flexible Entry Scheme.
