About the University's Editorial Style Guide

The University's Editorial Style Guide consists of two key areas:

The purpose of this style guide is to promote consistency in the language used in the University's publications, and to help answer questions you may have when publishing information about the University.

The University's publications, both in print and online, will perform most effectively if they are written in a consistent style, just as they should share a common visual style. Readers will only be confused if different publications use the English language in different ways.

The guidance on this website sets out the University's recommended style in a number of areas, including grammar and preferred spellings. It also includes sections on how to refer to the University and avoid discriminatory language.

We recognise that English is an evolving language – what is a preferred style today may not be so tomorrow. The guide is therefore constantly under review, and entries will be changed and added as necessary.

What is the guide based on?

In developing the guide, we have used as our references:

  • the Macquarie Dictionary
  • the Australian Government's Style manual for authors, editors and printers
  • The Cambridge Australian English Style Guide.

We have also drawn on best practice at other leading universities around the world.
