Names and job titles
Follow these general principles:
Names
- In most instances, refer to a person using their full given name and surname. On subsequent references, use the surname or first name only, depending on the tone of the publication.
- Include a middle initial ('Jane T Smith') or any preferred variation only on request – for example 'Borislav (Bob) J Kotic'. When using more than one initial, close up the gaps between letters and omit full stops – for example JS Bloggs or Joe S Bloggs.
- University style is not to use titles such as Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms and so on unless specifically requested. Academic prenominals such as Dr and Professor should be used.
- For a professor who has been awarded a knighthood or dameship, the correct form of address is Professor Sir Joseph Bloggs.
Job titles
- Using lower-case job titles is increasingly common, and is in line with a wider trend towards minimising unnecessary capitalisation. See the section on capitalisation for more information.
Buildings named after people
For buildings, lectures, and so on that are named after a person, close up the space between the initials and don't use full stops. For example, the RC Mills Building.
