Student Diversity at the University of Sydney
2005 - A Cultural Diversity Snapshot
- 22% of all students at the University (local and international) spoke a language other than English at home.
- 31% of our local students (or 11,496 students) were born overseas.
- In addition, 19% of our total enrolments were international students.
- Our student profile encompassed over 170 different countries of birth.
- 279 of our students were Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Supporting Student Diversity
The University provides a range of services for its culturally diverse student body.
Special Admissions Entry Schemes assist prospective students from disadvantaged groups to enter undergraduate programs:
- Broadway Scheme (places in highly competitive courses for HSC students who have experienced severe disadvantage during their final two years of high school)
- Cadigal Scheme (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students)
- Faculty of Health Sciences Multicultural Entry Scheme (for HSC students who have appropriate language skills and an understanding of the needs of major community groups).
- Mature-age Entry Scheme (for mature age students or those who have experienced educational disadvantage)
Support services assist students during their studies at the University:
- The Counselling Service provides support to students from diverse backgrounds.
- The International Student Support Unit (ISSU) provides targeted orientation sessions for new international students.
- The Koori Centre and Yooroang Garang (School of Indigenous Health Studies) provide support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- The Learning Centre offers specialised courses at all levels of tertiary study, with designated courses for students of non-English speaking background covering reading and writing skills, oral presentation skills and discussion skills.
- The Mathematics Learning Centre provides free tutorials and one-to-one assistance to students.
- Facilities to support students' religious practices include the Multifaith Chaplaincy Centre and the Islamic prayer room.
