Coursework Programs
The University of Sydney offers a range of postgraduate coursework programs with an emphasis on Environmental Science. The programs have been designed to accommodate both the "experienced" environmental scientist (seeking a qualification to go with their experience) and the "inexperienced" student (who may not have a background in science but who has an interest in the environment).
The offerings are:
Applied Science programs
The Applied Science programs are articulated, offering a Graduate Diploma in Applied Science and a Master of Applied Science for international students, and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Science, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Science, and a Master of Applied Science for local students. This general structure allows students to study at the depth they desire, while also allowing students to improve their qualification with the completion of further Units of Study.
- The Graduate Certificate in Applied Science requires the completion of 24 Units of Study.
- The Graduate Diploma in Applied Science requires the completion of 36 Units of Study.
- The Master of Applied Science requires the completion of 48 Units of Study.
Each of these awards can be taken full-time or part-time and can be enrolled in mid-year. All three Applied Science options are full-fee paying. Please visit the Postgraduate Program Fees page to learn more about this.
The Graduate Certificate requires a Bachelor degree or equivalent for admission, both the Graduate Diploma and Masters degree require a Science degree with good grades for direct entry. Students may transfer into the Environmental Science program from other postgraduate coursework programs within the University of Sydney.
Master of Environmental Science and Law
The Master of Environmental Science and Law award course has its own set of requirements. Students must be graduates of the University of Sydney holding the degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Laws, or be graduates of other universities (or other appropriate institutions) who have equivalent qualifications.
In undertaking the course, students must satisfy the following criteria:
- the completion of the core Unit of Study LAWS6044;
- completion of a minimum of 24 credit points selected from Units of Study in Law; and
- completion of a minimum of 24 credit points selected from Units of Study in Environmental Science.
Course Outcomes
Upon completion of the Graduate Certificate, graduates will possess a practical and theoretical background in some of the basic aspects of environmental science. This can be supplemented and extended upon completion of the Graduate Diploma, and extended further to include research and practical skills upon completion of the Masters program.
Students completing the full postgraduate program will have a solid grounding in all basic areas of environmental science, enabling them to understand the environmental problems that can arise and the disparate solutions that can be applied to solve such problems, and to comprehend all aspects of environmental assessment.
