Something to think about:

A quote from Albert Schweitzer from his book called "The Teaching of Reverence for Life" from a chapter called "Man and Animals".

"Whenever we harm any form of life, we must be clear about whether it was really necessary to do so.

Those who carry out scientific experiments with animals, in order to apply the knowledge gained to the alleviation of human ills, should never reassure themselves with the generality that their cruel acts serve a useful purpose. In each individual case they must ask themselves whether there is a real necessity for imposing such a sacrifice upon a living creature. They must try to reduce the suffering in so far as they are able.

In thus deciding from case to case, the truly ethical man is aware that he is accountable for the lives thus sacrificed."

Welcome to the University of Sydney Animal Ethics website.

The Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is responsible for overseeing the safety and wellbeing of all animals used in research and teaching within the University. All research and teaching at the University which involves animals requires ethical approval from the AEC. The AEC meets monthly to consider applications to use animals.

All research and teaching carried out with animals at the University must comply with the

NSW Animal Research Act (1985)

and the

Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes 7th Edition (NH&MRC 2004).
