Recruitment Methodology

Snowball Recruitment

This form of recruitment is acceptable only if it is in the passive form. That is participants may be asked to discuss the research with friends/contacts whom they think may be interested in volunteering to be participants. Those new participants should then contact the research team to volunteer. Active snowballing when participants volunteer their friends/contacts directly to the research team is not acceptable.

Market Research Companies

The use of market research companies is permitted but they must provide confirmation that:

  • they are accredited by their professional association
  • they adhere to the ethical guidelines for such groups
  • strict confidentiality will be maintained concerning participants names and addresses
  • strict confidentiality will be maintained for any data obtained.

The Market Research Company must sign a declaration that research data obtained will be the sole property of the research team. The research team must disclose from whom the funds are obtained to employ the Market Research Company.

Recruitment of patients

Where the treating professional (doctor, physiotherapist, nurse, etc) is involved in the research either as a researcher or as a recruiter, then the Committee prefers that potential participants in the research be given an introductory pamphlet describing that they will be approached about becoming research participants, and that they have the right to decline such participation without compromise to their subsequent treatment. The researcher/recruiter may then approach them to volunteer for the study only after they have had sufficient time to consider the original pamphlet.

Recruitment of students during lectures/tutorials

Where questionnaires are distributed at the time of classes this should not be done in class time, and specifically the questionnaires should not be completed in class time. Returning of the questionnaires should be arranged so that an anonymous returns box is the repository, so that there is no coercion possible from the research team.
