The scholarships listed below have funded the study of international students at the University of Sydney in the past. However, this is not a list of every scholarship that may be available throughout the world.
Students are encouraged to look for funding from any source available to them. For example, you may be able to find further scholarship information from companies, universities in your home country, the Australian mission in your home country, by searching the internet, etc.

Australian Development Scholarships
Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are a highly-valued form of development cooperation between Australia and partner countries with which Australia has a bilateral aid program. ADS provide partner countries with the opportunity to strengthen its human resource capacity through offering scholarships to individuals within key institutions, to undertake tertiary studies in Australia in areas relevant to the development needs of the country.
Scholarships are primarily for postgraduate study, however a limited number of undergraduate scholarships are available in specific countries. Applicants for ADS must satisfy both the general eligibility criteria and specific criteria established for each country. Australian Leadership Awards
The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is a new Australian Government program which provides scholarships and fellowships for current and future leaders from the Asia-Pacific Region.
Australian Leadership Awards are awarded to people who are already leaders or have a potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia and Pacific region.
"Awards are open to all fields of study, however, study programs that relate to the priority themes of international trade, pandemics, security and climate change, including clean energy are encouraged." (Extract from the ALA web site).

University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS)
The University of Sydney invites candidates who are eligible to undertake a Postgraduate Research Degree or Master's by Research program at this University to apply for the University of Sydney International Research Scholarship (USydIS).
The objective of the USydIS is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to undertake research projects which will enhance the University's research activities. The USydIS is open to all research disciplines, however participation in the USydIS program each semester is at the discretion of the Dean of each faculty. These scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants twice a year – in October/November in conjunction with the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) for commencement in Semester 1 (March), and in early April for commencement in Semester 2 (July).
The USydIS will cover tuition fees and living allowance for up to three years with a possibility of one semester's extension for PhD students.
Applicants who wish to be considered for the EIPRS and USydIS awards for semester 1, 2009 may indicate this by completing the relevant section of the Postgraduate Research Application form. To be considered for an award for semester 1, 2009 applications for admission to a research degree MUST be received by the International Office by 31 July 2008.
To be considered for the USydIS for semester 2, 2008 applications for admission to a research degree MUST be received by the International Office by 31 December 2007.
University of Sydney – China Scholarship Council Research Schemes
Please Note that applications for the 2008 intake of the University of Sydney-China Scholarship Council Postgraduate Research Studentship have now closed. Applications will open again in late 2008 for commencement of studies in semester 2, 2009
The University of Sydney and the China Scholarship Council offer two prestigious programs to support Chinese Scholars.
University of Sydney World Scholars
From 2009, up to 20 new full tuition fee PhD scholarships will be available per annum for international students. Scholarships will cover the full cost of tuition fees for three years. A travel contribution of up to $2000 will also be provided to scholarship holders towards a return international air fare.
The World Scholars program is for commencing international students undertaking a PhD in any discipline. The application process is highly competitive with scholarships awarded on the basis of research potential and academic merit. Scholarship holders should demonstrate, in their application, an outstanding academic track record and capacity to engage in innovative and world class research.
Each year the University will invite applications from selected participating countries. For the inaugural application round in 2008/09, these include: Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, European Union, Kenya & South Africa
Some countries, including China, have special scholarship schemes already in place at present.
How to apply
Applications will open in July 2008 for commencement in Semester 1, 2009. Prospective applicants must have a firm offer of admission from the University of Sydney before lodging a World Scholars application. In addition, PhD candidates are expected to have made contact with their potential academic supervisor prior to submitting their application for a higher degree by research. Candidates who are interested in applying for the University of Sydney World Scholars are encouraged to identify a potential supervisor as soon as possible.

Endeavour Australia Program
The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government's internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. A smaller number of awards are available for participants from Europe and the Americas.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS)
The Australian government’s EIPRS program provides tuition fees and is available to top quality international postgraduate students who wish to enrol in a research degree in Australian universities. The studies undertaken must be in subject areas identified as part of the University current and emerging research strengths.
Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the EIPRS, the University of Sydney awards International Postgraduate Award (IPA) to EIPRS holders. The IPA is a living allowance/stipend scholarship awarded to all EIPRS holders.
Applicants who wish to be considered for an EIPRS award for semester 1 (March commencement) or semester 2 (July commencement), may indicate this by completing the relevant section of the Postgraduate Research Application form. To be considered for an award, applications for admission to a research degree MUST be received by the International Office by:
31 July of the previous year for semester 1, (March commencement)
31 December of the previous year for semester 2, (July commencement)
In addition to the EIPRS awards, commencing students may also be considered for the University of Sydney International Scholarship (USydIS). The USydIS is open to all research disciplines, however participation in the USydIS program each semester is at the discretion of the Dean of each faculty. No application form for the USydIS is required and eligible applicants will be considered during the EIPRS selection process in October/November for scholarships to commence in Semester 1 (March), and in early April for scholarships to commence in Semester 2 (July).
The USydIS will cover tuition fees and a living allowance similar to the EIPRS.
Students who have commenced their research candidature at the University during the current year but were not considered for the EIPRS in the previous year due to the timing of their application and subsequent enrolment and would like to apply for the EIPRS should complete the special EIPRS application form (244kb pdf). This form MUST be received at the International Office by 31 August of the current year.

The Asian Development – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP)
The Asian Development – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) offers opportunities to talented individuals from its developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies with the support of the above scholarship program funded by the Government of Japan.
To be eligible to apply for the ADBJSP,candidates must have been admitted to one of the following programs approved by ADB at the University of Sydney:
- Master of Economics (March entry only)
- Master of Commerce or Master of International Business
- Master of Transport Management
- Master of International Public Health
- Master of Engineering Studies (Civil, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering only).
Application forms are available from the International Office or can be downloaded from the ADB-Japan Scholarship page.
Closing dates are 30 April for February/March entry and 31 October for July entry.

Thai Government
The Thai Government offers Thai students the opportunity to apply for a Thai Government Scholarship. The scholarships are normally available for students in their last year of their bachelor degree or who are currently studying a masters or a PhD. The closing date for the applications is normally 31 July each year.

Fulbright
The Fulbright program was created by the US Congress in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through education and cultural exchanges. Grants are available for one year to postgraduate American students who require supervised field work or who need to use Australian research facilities to earn credit towards their US degrees.
Students who have been awarded a Fulbright scholarship are exempt from tuition fees while studying at the University of Sydney.

Rotary International
Rotary International administers academic-year, multi-year and cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships. Contact your local Rotary club to find out which scholarships your district is sponsoring, inquire about local application deadlines, and to obtain application materials.

US Federal Student Aid

Northcote Graduate Scholarships
These scholarships are to enable students resident in the UK to undertake a higher degree at an Australian university for up to three years in any field of study. The scholarship covers return economy airfares, university fees, and a living stipend.

Commonwealth Scholarships
Any Commonwealth country that wishes to do so may institute awards under this plan; however not every country participates and others review their participation on an annual basis. Countries who have participated in the recent past include Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
To be considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be nominated by the Scholarship Agency in your country of permanent residence.

Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP)
The IFP provides opportunities for advanced study to exceptional individuals who will use this education to become leaders in the respective fields, furthering development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. IFP is funded by the Ford Foundation and it has invested US$280 million over ten years to 2010.
The IFP provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level degree studies. Fellows are selected from countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Russia (US nationals are not eligible).

The Toyota Foundation
This Foundation provides financial assistance to carry out projects in Japan and other countries, mainly in the developing world, that address issues such as environmental sustainability, the improvement of social welfare, the advancement of education and scholarship, the strengthening of civil society and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Jason (Joint Academic Scholarships On-line Network)
JASON is an on-line database of scholarship information for postgraduate students. It has been initiated by a consortium of Australian universities and is presently administered by The University of Melbourne.
The JASON project has been endorsed by the Australian National Council for Deans and Directors of Graduate Schools and the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee. It is intended to assist students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies (either within Australia or internationally) gain access to current information regarding funding opportunities through various scholarship programs run through universities, charitable foundations, government and private institutions.

Michael H. Rathgeber Scholarship (for residence at International House)
The scholarship was established in 1971 by a gift from Dr and Mrs Henri Rathgeber, to establish the Michael H. Rathgeber Scholarship in memory of their son who lived in the University’s International House from its inception until his death in 1969. This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or postgraduate student of the University of Sydney with a good academic record or with special abilities, who would benefit from residence in International House and contribute to its purpose - but who would not be able to live in International House without financial assistance.
The Scholarship will be for 50% of the International House fees at the time for a single study bedroom accommodation during an academic year. The scholarship will be awarded for one academic year but may be awarded for a subsequent year or years. This scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney on the advice of an International House Selection Committee. Preference will be given to an Australian Aboriginal or a student from Papua New Guinea or the Pacific Islands.

Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR) Scholarship Program
CAAR scholarships are offered to citizens of the Arab League countries who wish to undertake short term postgraduate study in Australia. The Arab League countries are: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, the Palestine Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
The scholarships will meet the costs of university course fees, travel, establishment in Australia, and living expenses for up to 12 months’ study.
CAAR was established by the Australian Government in January 2003 to strengthen ties between Australia and Arab countries. The Council’s role is to promote greater understanding and acceptance of Australian and Arab cultures, values, beliefs and diversity. The focus is on commercial and people-to-people links and it also works to strengthen academic and educational ties.

Talentia Scholarships for Spanish or European Union Member State Nationals
Talentia Scholarships offer tuition fees and other financial assistance to Spanish nationals or nationals of a European Union Member State with a residential, educational or employment connection to the state of Andalusia, to undertake postgraduate programs at selected prestigious universities including the University of Sydney.
