International Undergraduate Entry Requirements

The PDF files below list entry requirements for international students applying to undergraduate programs at the University of Sydney in 2009 and 2010.

Equivalent academic entry grades are provided for some common international secondary qualifications. See the guide at the bottom of this page for a description of these qualifications. Guide to tables

Key Explanation
U+C  A combination of UAI plus additional selection criteria (e.g. portfolio, audition, STAT/ISAT exam).  Please see Special Entry Criteria for more details.
Yrs The standard full time course duration in years. Most international students must maintain a full time course load as a condition of their student visa.
M/J Indicates whether the course is available for entry in March and/or July. Note that the standard academic year runs from March to November - some courses may have limited subject choices if commenced in the July semester.
English - IELTS The first score is the overall score required, the second score (in brackets) is the minimum score required in each component. For more information on other tests and meeting English requirements, refer to  English language requirements.
English - IBT The IBT is the Internet-based TOEFL test. The first score is the overall requirement (total of all components). Students must also achieve the required minimum in the Writing section (the first number in brackets) and all other sections (second number in brackets). For more information on other tests and meeting English requirements, refer to  English language requirements.
UAI University Admission Index. This is the entry requirement set by faculties for their courses. A UAI is determined for all New South Wales Year 12 students upon completion of their HSC. Australian Year 12 qualifications from other states are equivalent (eg, Victorian ENTER, West Australian TER) or an equivalent is determined (eg, Queensland, NZ NCEA) when you apply.
USFP University of Sydney Foundation program (the same entry requirements apply to the University of New South Wales Foundation program). The USFP scores can serve as a guide to entry for other foundation programs. However, students should note that, depending on the foundation program, the requirements may vary from course to course and are generally higher. Some foundation programs are expressed as a percentage. In this table an 8 is equal to 80%, 9.5 is 95% and so on. Separate English requirements will also apply.
AL3 & AL4 A Levels including UK GCE and Cambridge local examinations syndicates such as Singapore and Mauritius. Applicants must present either 3 or 4 Advanced level (A2) subjects in the same academic year. The entry requirement is determined by the total of all A2 subjects (where a mark of A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1). A maximum of two 'Stand Alone' Advanced Subsidiary subjects may be added to the total (where a mark of A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5), as long as these subjects have not been studied at Advanced Level.
HK ALE Hong Kong A Levels. Total of best three subjects at Advanced Level (where A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1). Add one to aggregate is Pure or Applied Maths, Chemistry, Biology or Physics are included. Advanced Supplementary subjects may also be added to the total (where A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5).
IB International Baccalaureate Diploma. Entry based on total score for completed IB Diploma.
FB French Baccalaureat admission average.
CBSE All India Senior School Certificate awarded by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Entry requirement is the total of best four grades (where A1=5, A2=4.5, B1=3.5, B2=3, C1=2, C2=1.5, D1=1, D2=0.5).
ISC Indian School Certificate awarded by the Indian Council of School Examinations. Average of all grades reported.
OSSD Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Canada). Entry requirement is the average of 6 University/College preparation courses.
Isrl Israel Teudat Bagrut. Entry requirement is the average ranking across all subjects taken.
Vitnml Norwegian Certificate of Completion of Upper Secondary School Examinations (Vitnemal fra den Videregaende Skole).
Sth Afr South African Senior Certificate or Matriculation Certificate (Joint Matriculation Board) / Senior Certificate (Independent Examinations Board). Average of best 6 Higher Grade subjects (where A=6, B=5, C=4, D=3, E=2).
SAT Scholastic Aptitude Test (USA). Total of Critical Reading, Mathematical and Writing test scores. A minimum of one Advanced Placement subject must be presented with a minimum Grade B or score of 4 or better.
Sweden Swedish Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Slutbetyg). Entry requirement is the grade point average (where MVG=4, VG=3, G=2, IG=1).
SPT3 & SPT4 Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia. Total of 3 or 4 Advanced Level subjects taken in the same academic year (where A=7, A-=6, B+=5, B=4, B-=3, C+=2, C=1).
Singapore A Level  Singapore A Levels Refers to the A levels conducted in Singapore from 2007onwards. Applicants must present at least 3 H2 subjects, 1 H1 content-based subject, Project Work and General Paper (GP) or Knowledge and Inquiry (KI).  Entry is calculated on the basis that A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 for H2 subjects. The notional value of H1 subjects is half of that assigned to H2 subjects (where A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5).  H3 subjects are not included in the calculation.
German Abitur  The 'average grade' or Durchschnittsnote is used to assess this qualification
Danish Studentereksamen  The scores listed are based on the 13 point grading scale.  For qualifications using the new 12 point grading scale, the required score may vary from the scores listed for the 13 pint scale. The scores for the new grading system are currently not available for publishing.
