Outgoing University of Sydney ELECTIVE students to Cambodia (Jul-Aug 2009 and Jan 2010 - Mar 2010)

Due to transition timetabling of Stage 3 in 2009 there will be up to two elective placements available for Stream 4 students in July-September 2009 based at a field site in Kep, Cambodia on the coast of Cambodia. There will also be up to two placements in the normal elective period January-March 2010. The Canadian Institute for Health at University of Toronto has agreed to host and supervise a small number of University of Sydney students at their facility. The field site aims to be self-sufficient so a fee of approximately US$400 per four weeks will be required and students need to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements on top of this placement fee.
The Kep location is rural and the focus of the field site is public health and primary care. A short news article about the program can be found at http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/589851. It shows that students can expect to be involved in a range of activities from water filtration to antenatal care.
By January 2010, it is anticipated that the Kep elective could be combined with a placement in one of the University of Health Science teaching hospitals in Pnom Penh or possibly a small orphanage in rural Cambodia. These additional options will not be finalised until at August 2009 so students need to be flexible as we establish these new placements with our Cambodian partners.
Following the tragic death of one of our alumni, Dr Carl Jackson MBBS 2007, his family and friends have established a scholarship to Cambodia in his memory. A scholarship of $2,500 is available for up to two students in Stream 4 and up to two in the normal elective period to undertake their elective in Cambodia. Carl had been profoundly influenced by his own elective in Cambodia and his family hope that the scholarships will facilitate the same opportunity for other students in the Sydney Medical Program.
This is a new placement within the Medical Program international placement program for 2009 and a late application round will be called via a bulletin in April-May 2009. Short-listed applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Between mid January and mid February 2010, Med 1 and 2 students may apply for an ILA at the Canadian Institute for Health field site at Kep in Cambodia. The cost of the placement is US$400 per four weeks and helps to support the ongoing public health and primary care of this rural outreach program. On-site supervision will be provided by the University of Toronto staff. Students will need to find their own accommodation and travel expenses.
Written applications will be called for via a UsydMP bulletin in April-May 2009. Short-listed applicants may be required to attend an interview.
