Outgoing University of Sydney ELECTIVE students to China (Dec 2009 - Feb 2010)

Professor Wu, George Institute China

This elective exchange placement is for up to two students in Stage 4 in 2008. Students will have the opportunity to spend four weeks in Beijing, based at the China office of the George Institute for International Health and four weeks in Shanghai at the Renji Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong Medical School. Students in Stream 4 2009 can apply for this elective but should be flexible. We will do our best to arrange what we can.

The George Institute for International Health

The George Institute China is an affiliated research centre of the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney. They also have an affiliation with the Peking University Health Sciences Center, one of the top medical schools in China.

During this part of the elective placement, students will be able to work with local researchers on one of the Institute’s research projects, which include clinical trials in cardiovascular disease and injury prevention.

The University of Sydney’s Faculties of Health also has some shared office space in this facility. The Dean has offered a $3,000 George Institute China scholarship for one student during this placement which will be awarded by the selection panel to the best applicant. Students may need to find their own accommodation in Beijing for this period but some assistance may be obtained from staff at the George Institute Office China. In 2008-09, Trevor Ma and Jeffery Liang are the first students to undertake this placement.

The Renji Hospital was originally opened in 1844 but students will be placed in the new hospital in the Pudong district which houses the main teaching facilities, a 1,000 bed hospital and an adjacent paediatric and maternity hospital.
