Karolinska Institute Stockholm (Sweden)

Outgoing University of Sydney elective students to Karolinska Institute (Dec 2009-Feb 2010)

Karolinska Institute

The University of Sydney is the only Australian partner in the Karolinska Institute exchange program & the program has been active for several years. The Karolinska Institute offers a number of their courses and options in English and up to two University of Sydney students will be nominated to spend their elective in Stockholm.

The next round of placements for December 2009-February 2010 will be advertised early in 2009 via a bulletin. It will be open to all students regardless of clinical school and country of origin. Unfortunately, Karolinska is not able to accommodate students from Stream 4 in 2009 due to University term breaks during late August-September.

General information about the Karolinska Institute can be found on their website along with courses available in English for exchange students from partner institutions.

Lisa Lee-Horn, representing the University of Sydney at the Karolinska Institute

In 2008, Lisa Lee-Horn represented the University of Sydney at the Karolinska Institute. She completed her honours in paediatric oncology and hopes to further her interest in this area. She has been inspired by a visiting fellow from Scandinavia who was at Westmead Hospital during her ICAs. Lisa sums up her hopes for the exchange placement as follows:

"Although it is still early in my medical
career, it would be an amazing opportunity to work in a country where I may potentially do a fellowship, and possibly meet staff who may become useful contacts, mentor and colleagues in the future."

Travel and living expenses must be borne by students, although some subsidised accommodation may be available.

Incoming Karolinska Institute students to University of Sydney in 2009

The International Office at the Karolinska Institute will nominate up to two students per year for short term elective placement at the University of Sydney. Students should nominate subspecialty areas of special interest & we will do our best to accommodate individual preference.

In 2008, Maria Kennestead undertook a one week placement in neonatology, four weeks in anaesthetics and 3 weeks in cardiology at the Royal North Shore Hospital.

If a particular hospital or location is preferred this should be indicated and we will try to find a placement to suit your needs. It is suggested that interested students from Karolinska should browse through the following websites to gain some idea of possible elective placement opportunities.
