Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision 2008
The Graduate Studies Office has responsibility for these annual awards which promote, recognise and reward excellence in research higher degree supervision at the University of Sydney.
Professor Rick Shine of the University’s School of Biological Sciences has won the 2008 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision. The Professor in Evolutionary Biology has been a Federation Fellow of the Australian Research Council since 2002. Former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gavin Brown, congratulated Professor Shine and commented that ‘Rick’s track record as a supervisor is exemplary with more than 70 students and postdoctoral fellows being supervised in his 20 year career at the University of Sydney. He is a well deserved recipient of the Award and we are confident that he will continue to be an excellent role model to staff and students alike.’ Professor Shine was delighted to receive the award and said ‘I just hope that my students have learnt as much from me as I have from them.’ For more information on Professor Shine, please go to http://www.bio.usyd.edu.au/Shinelab/
The Vice-Chancellor also wrote two letters of commendation to acknowledge the ongoing contributions of Associate Professor Sandra West (Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery) and Dr Carole Cusack (Department of Studies in Religion). The Vice-Chancellor was extremely impressed with the quality of supervision being provided by Sandra and Carole and encouraged them to continue the good work.
