1. Welcome from the Dean

As Dean, and on behalf of the whole faculty, I warmly welcome you to the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sydney, whether as a prospective student, current student, alumnus of the faculty, professional colleague or as someone interested in who we are and what we do.
This faculty has played a very important role in the history of Nursing and Midwifery education in Australia with its antecendent institutions being pioneers in the development of nursing and midwifery within the higher education sector.
We continue this spirit of innovation and development today with our new graduate entry Master of Nursing program and combined degree programs where you can combine an Arts, Science, Health Science or Exercise and Sports Science degree with your Master of Nursing and in four years exit with your chosen undergraduate degree, a Master's of Nursing and your eligibility to apply for registration as a nurse in NSW.
The faculty offers a full suite of programs from entry to practice, through postgraduate specialty courses at the level of graduate certificate, graduate diploma or master's degree, and on to the highest level of academic achievement, the doctorate.
The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to becoming one of the University of Sydney's research intensive faculties and we are currently growing our research capacity and our research student training capacity. The faculty is a great place for research students with a really colleagial, stimulating and supportive environment.

Introduction to this handbook
This handbook provides you with information about the degrees offered by the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
It contains separate chapters that deal with pre-registration (courses that lead to registration as a nurse), post-registration (courses that are designed for registered nurses to upgrade their qualifications from certificate and/or diploma to bachelor's degree level), postgraduate coursework studies for registered nurses, health services management and research degrees.
In all of the above cases you will be able to find the units of study you need to complete a degree and in many instances, the order in which you need to study the units.
There is also a specific chapter which deals with the rules and regulations that govern each of the degrees and under which decisions about your study may be made. These include faculty and Senate resolutions.
For ease of use this handbook is colour-coded and separated into three sections; the undergraduate chapters are ivory, the postgraduate chapters are blue, and degree resolutions and faculty policies are white.
To learn more about the course you have enrolled in or wish to enrol in, you should go to the chapter which best describes your circumstances. You are also strongly encouraged to read Chapter 4: Guide for Students, which contains important information that will help you throughout your study.
In addition to the above information the handbook may be used to learn more about the staff of the faculty and their research interests, general information about clinical requirements, both off-campus and in the laboratories, specific faculty dates, which may vary from those published by the University, and other information about faculty operations.
