Honours

Student profile: Joseph Brennan: I'm doing honours in the Department of Media and Communications where my research topic is slash fiction.

I chose Sydney because its academic excellence is recognised locally and abroad and my research supervisor is an expert in her field. The grandeur of the University's grounds also make it an inspiring place to study.

If undergraduate study is about familiarising yourself with other people's ideas about a subject, honours, for me, is about building on those ideas with some of your own

What is Honours?

At the University of Sydney, most undergraduate degrees can be completed "with honours". Honours works differently on the faculty, and usually involves either:

the completion of a separate honours year
additional work in the later years of the course, or
meritorious achievement over all years of the course

For those faculties where honours is a research based academic year taken at the completion of a bachelors degree, gaining entry is competitive and is available regardless of where you studied your undergraduate degree. The additional honours year is available to students from the following disciplines:

Arts
Architecture
Economics and Business
Health Sciences
Information Technologies
Science
Visual Arts (Sydney College of the Arts)

In faculties other than those listed above honours is offered to students after the completion of additional work in the later years of the course or meritorious achievement over all years of the course. You should check the website of the Faculty in your area of interest for more information.
