Wireless network
In the last few months many of the old wireless access points around the campus have been upgraded from 11 to 54 megabits per second. This provides higher download speeds and improved response times from the network.
In early May, a trial of "wireless mobility" will commence in ICT's H08 building, in preparation for making this service available across the entire University campus. When the trial is completed next month, wireless mobility will be rolled out across all the access points on the campus. This should take two to three months. Once this is done, people who move with their laptops from one access point area to another will be able to keep their network connection through the same network address, instead of potentially having to reconnect as at present.
Wireless coverage in Eastern Avenue has been installed, and will be activated once the domain pedestrian precinct is completed in a few months.
Web accessibility forum
On 9 May, the University Library is hosting a web accessibility forum organised by WANAU. WANAU aims to raise awareness of the problems encountered by people with disabilities that affect their use of the web, and to provide information and resources on accessible web design.
Topics to be covered at the forum include:
- accessibility and the importance of user testing;
- making non-HTML content accessible;
- Australian university website accessibility revisited.
