Usyd Wireless Setup - Mac OS X

Want to connect to the USYD Wireless connection? Theres a few things you have to do first.

Setup your account
1. Activate your account for VPN

Setup your laptop
2. Setup your different locations
3. Setup the VPN Client

Connect
4. Make sure that you've connected to an Access Point
5. Connect your VPN client

Once you've done all of this you'll be connected to USYD's wireless network. Our complete step by step guide is below (or you can download and print off a pdf copy from the quick links menu on the right)

1. Enable the VPN Option

The VPN option will need to be added to your UniKey account to allow access to our wireless service.

1.1. Firstly, go to Unikey Account Options

1.2. Log in using your UNIKEY username and password.

1.3. Ensure that the “VPN Access” selection box is ticked. Re-type your password and wait for 15 minutes.

IMPORTANT: No other option needs to be changed! If you change other options, your account may be charged!

2. Set up Safari

Your proxy settings will determine whether you use your free 6 megabytes of daily internet allowance, or the money on your UniKey account to surf internet.

2.1. Go to the Apple menu and select Network Preferences from the Location menu

2.2. Select New Location from the Location selection bar.

2.3. Name this location to something like Usyd Free Wireless or Usyd Free Cache

2.4 Repeat step 2.2 and name another location Usyd Wireless Paid

2.5. Change the Show field to Airport

2.5.1 For the Usyd Wireless Paid location, place a tick in the Automatic Proxy Configuration tick box and enter in http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac in the Proxy Configuration File URL field

2.5.2 Similarly, for the Usyd Wireless Free location, place a tick in the Automatic Proxy Configuration tick box and enter in http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy-alabs.pac in the Proxy Configuration File URL field

3. Download the Cisco VPN Client

The next step is to download the Cisco VPN client from our website. The Cisco VPN client allows your computer to make a secure connection to the internet using your UniKey account.

3.1 If you are unsure what version of Mac OS X you are running, click on the apple icon and select About This Mac

3.2 Download the MAC OS X version that applies to you from the VPN downloads page

4. Cisco VPN Installation

4.1 After the download has completed there will be the DMG archive on your desktop (if you downloaded it to a different location such as a folder, then the archive will be there.) When extracted, this will produce an image file. When opened, this will mount the virtual disk on the desktop. Inside it is the Installer icon and two folders. These items are shown below:

4.2 Double click on the .mpkg installer. This will launch the installation package.

4.3 Read the contents of each screen before pressing Continue. When you are prompted for the hard disk or partition to install to, pick your primary partition, not the virtual drive:

5. Using the Cisco VPN Client

The final step now is to start using the Cisco VPN client to access the internet. In most cases, it is accessible via the Applications Folder. Double click on the VPN Client. If you think that you could be using the program regularly you can drag the VPN Client onto your dock.

5.2 Select the Wireless profile by clicking on it and then click on the Connect Icon.

5.3 After clicking on connect the Cisco VPN client should then pop up a window asking for a username and password. Your username will determine your level of access.

5.3.1 For free cache access, just enter in your UniKey username and password. This will allow you access to all websites on port 80. However you will have difficulties accessing any programs that does not run on port 80, such as instant chat programs and email clients.

5.3.2 To access these types of programs simply enter an !10 after your UniKey login (e.g. abcd1234!10). However the free cache will not work and you will have to switch to paid cache to access websites
