Usyd Wireless Setup - Vista
Want to connect to the USYD Wireless connection? Theres a few things you have to do first.
Setup your account
1. Activate your account for VPN

1. Activate your account for VPN
The VPN option will need to be added to your UniKey account to allow access to our VPN service.
1.1. Go to Unikey Account Tools
1.2. Log in using your UNIKEY username and password.
1.3. Ensure that the “VPN Access” selection box is ticked. Re-type your password, then wait for 15 minutes.
IMPORTANT: No other option needs to be changed! If you change other options, your account may be charged!

2. Download and Install the Cisco VPN Client
The next step is to download the Cisco VPN client. The Cisco VPN client allows your computer to make a secure connection to the internet using your UniKey account.
2.1. Download the Vista compatibile Cisco VPN Client
2.2. When the File Download pop up window appears Click Run.
2.3. Then Click Run again.

2.4. The self-extracting exe file will automatically unzip the Cisco VPN client setup files to your machine’s default temp directory and run the Cisco vpn install program.

2.5. Once the Cisco VPN client has been installed it will ask you to restart your machine, select restart my machine later, as we are not finished with the wireless setup.
3. Proxy Settings - Configure Internet Explorer
Your proxy settings will determine whether you use your free 6 megabytes of daily internet allowance, or the money on your UniKey account to surf internet.
If you use your computer on a network other than the Sydney University’s network, you will need to remove the proxy settings from your web browser.
3.1 To setup the proxy settings, open Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Once the options appear on screen, select the Connections tab, then Click on the LAN Settings button to enter proxy settings; these settings allow free or paid access to the internet.

3.2. To use the free servive, untick all other boxes and tick the box marked “Use automatic configuration script”.
In the Address field type: http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy-alabs.pac
3.3. To user the paid service at 2c/MB, untick all other boxes and tick the box marked “Use automatic configuration script”.
In the Address field type: http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac

4. Conencting to the Usyd Wireless Access Point
If you have already connected to the wireless access point to access this webpage, please go to the next section.
This section will run through on how to connect to the usyd wireless access point by using windows vista as the wireless manager. However a large number of laptops come with their own 3rd party wireless manager. You may connect to the wireless access points with a 3rd party manager. If you have connected to the wireless access point with a 3rd party utility please skip this section.
You will need to have your wireless card installed and turned on. Most laptops require the user to turn the wireless card on by pressing a function on the keyboard or a button on the side of the machine.
4.1. Click on the Start Menu, then click on Connect To

4.2. Wireless networks should now appear if you are in an area within the university that has an access point. The university’s signal names are in the form of usyd-. For example, in Fisher Library (building code: F03), the network listed is “usyd-f03”. Double-click on the signal you want or click Connect.

5. Using the Cisco VPN Client
The Cisco VPN provides security by encrypting data to and from your computer, in effect creating a private tunnel through the Internet for your communication. You will need to connect to the Cisco VPN client every time you want to access external webpages on the wireless network.
5.1 You must now if you have not already restarted, beforehand read the rest of the steps in this section.
5.2 The final step now is to start using the Cisco VPN client to access the internet. In most cases, it is accessible via the Start Menu Click on All Programs then Cisco Systems VPN Client and finally the VPN Client.

5.3 Select the Wireless profile by clicking on it and then click on the Connect Icon.

5.4 After clicking on connect the Cisco VPN client should then pop up a window asking for a username and password. Your username will determine your level of access.
5.4.1 For free cache access, just enter in your UniKey username and password. This will allow you access to all websites on port 80. However you will have difficulties accessing any programs that does not run on port 80, such as instant chat programs and email clients.
5.4.2 To access these types of programs simply enter an !10 after your UniKey login (e.g. abcd1234!10). However the free cache will not work and you will have to switch to paid cache to access websites.
