Basic UniKey information

What’s a UniKey?

Your UniKey account is your ‘personal key’ to access the online services and e-facilities provided to staff and students of the University of Sydney. It is generally made after your enrolment is processed and included on most students' confirmation of enrolment letter.

What should my UniKey look like?

The UniKey account login is normally in the format of 4 letters and 4 numbers. For example: cwal1234.
Your UniKey login is NOT your student email address. Your student email address has the format UniKey@uni.sydney.edu.au

When do I get my UniKey?

It is generally received after your enrolment is processed and is included on most students' confirmation of enrolment letter.

Why do I need money/credit on my UniKey account?

Your UniKey is your key to the services offered to you as a student. Your account not only contains your enrolment details, contact details and student webmail account – the same account is use to pay things like library fines, printing, wireless internet access and course notes.

I get a UniKey email account?? How? Where?

All UniKey accounts have an email account that has the address format of UniKey@uni.sydney.edu.au.

All students with a UniKey account can access their email via Sydney Mail.

UniKey password

What is my UniKey password?

You should have received all your UniKey account details (including the password) on your enrolment confirmation sheet. It will look like a random set of characters and numbers (because it is a randomly generated password), so we suggest you change your password as soon as possible.

I’ve forgotten/lost my UniKey password… what do I do?!

First of all don’t panic. You should probably reset it as soon as possible though. If you’re on campus you can visit an ICT Access Lab in order to get your password reset on the spot. Just remember to bring some photo ID with you.

If you can't come in person, then contact the ICT Helpdesk on +61 2 9351 6000, and they will post a new password to your registered postal address.

UniKey account options

What types of options are available on my UniKey account?

You’re UniKey is a versatile thing… you will need it to:

  • Access your student email
  • Log into Usyd’s wireless facility
  • Allow VPN access
  • Allow web access
  • Allow UNIX access
  • Increase disk quota
  • Increase mail quota

Just remember that most of these options require credit in your UniKey account and you’ll be charged for adding some options on a monthly basis. You can find a full list of costing information at http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/internet/costs.shtml.

How do I add or remove options to my UniKey account?

You can change your account access options in by clicking "Add/remove account options" under the "UniKey management" section of the site. Remember that wireless web access may incur a monthly fee (so does access to additional disk space), and you will be charged the pro-rata monthly fee as soon as you add the option. You can find a full list of costing information at http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/internet/costs.shtml.

Can I share my UniKey account with a friend?

According to the University of Sydney's Information & Communications Resources (ICTR) Policy, you cannot share your account with anyone. In doing so, this becomes a breach in a University Policy, and further action may be taken.

UniKey transactions

What type of transactions can I do with my UniKey?

If you have credit in your account, you can use your UniKey to:

  1. Pay library fines (visit: https://www.auth.usyd.edu.au/extro/libfine/)
  2. Order your student notes (visit: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ups/notes/notes_login.html)
  3. You can request a refund if you paid for options (1) or (2) with a credit card (visit: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/unikey/other.shtml)
  4. You can request a GST tax invoice with a printable receipt (visit: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/unikey/other.shtml)
  5. Transfer funds between different UniKey accounts (visit: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/unikey/transfer.shtml)

I need money on my account – how do I add credit or "recharge" my account?

There are two common ways to "recharge" or add credit to your UniKey account:

  1. Pay online with a credit card.
This incurs a $0.25 fee but is the only method that allows online refunds. To do this visit the “UniKey management” section of this site.
  2. Pay in person at an ICT Access Lab.
We accept EFTPOS and credit cards (except American Express or Diners). We do NOT accept cash. To pay by cash you have to deposit money at the cashier’s office located in the Jane Foss Russell Building and present your receipt later at the Fisher Access Lab.

Can I transfer funds from my UniKey account to another UniKey account?

You can transfer funds from your UniKey account to another UniKey account by choosing "Transfer funds" under the "UniKey management" section of the site.
You may want to do this if you are leaving the University and still have credit in your account.

I made a payment to my UniKey account but I want a refund!

If your last payment on your UniKey account was made online by using your credit card, you can get a refund to that credit card using the link below or visiting the "Other transactions" section of the "UniKey management" section of this site.

If your last payment was not made by credit card, then you will need to come in person to the Fisher Access Lab and fill in a refund form, which you will then need to take to cashiers office, located in the Jane Foss Russell Building (next to the Wentworth Building).

Another option may be to transfer your balance to a friend's account, please see Transfer Funds above.
