About us

The Institute of Social Sciences operates at the university level to support the activities and performance of the social sciences across the entire University of Sydney. It is

  • a catalyst for new developments, especially those that are cross disciplinary
  • a resource to enhance current academic endeavour
  • a hub for a series of activities that bring social scientists together across the University, and it acts
  • as a voice for the social sciences at the University of Sydney to the outside world.

At the University of Sydney the social sciences exist in every faculty. In disciplinary terms the University follows the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in recognizing anthropology, demography, geography, linguistics, sociology, accounting, economics, economic history, statistics, history, law, management, philosophy, political science, international relations, education, psychology, and social medicine, as its key social sciences.
