Prizes

The Institute of Social Sciences has established three annual prize competitions to showcase social science research at the University of Sydney:

  • Best Social Science PhD in 2008
  • Best Published Research by an Early Career Researcher in 2008
  • Best Published Research by a Mid-Career Researcher in 2008

Each prize will be $5000, to be disbursed as research funds.

In addition to their prizes, the winners will be invited to speak at the Institute’s Annual Forum, to be held in September.

Nominations should include:

  • A copy of the text in question, and
  • A statement explaining in detail how and why the work in question achieves excellence in terms of its field and findings.
  • In addition, nomination for the Best Social Science PhD should also include:
  1. A nomination statement from the PhD supervisor, outlining the significance and merit of the PhD and its research; and
  2. Copies of all examination reports.

An Early Career Researcher is someone within five years of being awarded their PhD.
A Mid-career Researcher is someone who is within fifteen years of being awarded their PhD and who has not yet been appointed or promoted as a full professor. Exemptions may be granted for periods out of the academic workforce.

The nominations will be reviewed by the Prizes Committee.
