OECD Secretary-General addressed the University of Sydney’s International Forum on "Globalisation: a learning curve", Friday 8 August 2008 MacLaurin Hall, Quadrangle building

The Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Mr. Angel Gurria, was the key guest speaker at the University of Sydney's International Forum on Friday, 8 August.

The OECD was established in 1961 and brings together the governments of countries committed to democracy and the market economy from around the world to: support sustainable economic growth; boost employment; raise living standards; maintain financial stability; assist other countries' economic development and contribute to growth in world trade. The OECD is located in Paris, France and has a membership of 30 countries. The OECD also shares expertise and exchanges views with more than 100 other countries and economies, from Brazil, China, and Russia to the least developed countries in Africa

The addressed was a major opportunity for the Secretary-General to convey to a broad set of Australian stakeholders the importance of the work of the OECD, to provide a clear understanding of its future directions and an appreciation of Australia’s role in the Organisation.

Following the Secretary-General’s presentation, distinguished speakers were invited to provide comments including the Australian Ambassador & Permanent Representative to the OECD, Mr Christopher Langman and Professor and Director of the Graduate School of Government at the University of Sydney, The Hon. Dr. Geoff Gallop AC.

The University of Sydney's International Forum series brings together leaders and thinkers from around the world to present their views on strategic international issues and the way in which these issues may impact on Australia and the globe. The audience include prominent persons from government, business and academia. The forum provide the opportunity for students to engage with the international community and have a more hands-on involvement with international issues.

The Forum was held on Friday, 8 August at 10:00am in the MacLaurin Hall, Main Quadrangle Building, University of Sydney.
