Current Appointment at Sydney

 

The role of University Librarian involves overall management of the seventeen libraries which comprise the University of Sydney Library. It also requires leadership in the provision of information resources which support contemporary and future learning and research. This role includes a wide range of issues including changes in the way in which information is created, stored and accessed, as well as providing physical environments which are conducive to scholarship. Current strategic priorities include:

  • maintaining the quality of the library collections and services
  • implementing strategies to make the most effective use of publications in digital formats
  • providing leadership in the adoption of digital knowledge management services
  • enhancing library environments through planning for new Law and SciTech libraries and the renovation of the Fisher Library
  • developing services which support life-long learning particularly by alumni

Short Career Summary

 

John Shipp was appointed University Librarian in August 1997. For the previous eleven years he was University Librarian at the University of Wollongong. He has served terms as President of the Australian Library and Information Association and of the Council of Australian University Librarians. He is a Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association and of the University of Wollongong. He is the Chair of the Lending Rights Committee which reports to the Federal Minister for the Arts and is Project Director for the Australian Research Information Infrastructure Committee.
