Facilities and Amenities

The House has a number of facilities available:

  • a modern computer access lab
  • fibre-optic cable links to each study bedroom [two ports in twin rooms] for access through to the University for direct link to the internet (please note there is no charge for connection from International House, however, The University of Sydney IT Services will provide students with an "extro account". Please enquire with the University on cost and account access).
  • a library with study areas
  • sports rooms including billiards and table tennis
  • a party room with its own kitchen for private functions and religious festivals
  • a meditation room
  • a coffee room with microwaves, tea/coffee facilities and daily newspapers
  • a resident photocopier, scanner and fax
  • disabled access/facilities
  • two upright pianos [music room and dining room] and a concert grand [Wool Room]
  • a photographic darkroom
  • a laundry [washing machines, dryers, irons]
  • a small garden comprised of Australian native shrubs
  • a necessity shop, run by the International House Members Association open in the evening during semesters
  • secure parking for about 25 cars and motorbikes
  • a mini-bus for groups of residents to use to explore Australia during the holidays
  • a log cabin in a national park that is south of Sydney
Sydney From the Rooftop

Dining Room
Most of the socialising takes place in the dining room during meal times. There are, however, pantries on every floor equipped with a microwave, rice cooker, wok and fridge should residents require or wish to make their own snacks.

Rooftop Garden
Residents can enjoy the rooftop garden area with barbecue and sheltered seating overlooking the wonderful Sydney city skyline.

The Wool Room
The Wool Room has audio visual facilities and it is used for concerts, International Night, discos, and other events. It is also used as a student common room and is a good place to sit and chat.

Computer Access Centre
The Computer Access Centre has 10 HP desk top computers and a large capacity laser printer and scanner. Students have access to the lab 24 hrs a day. A fax machine is available in the main foyer for residents.

The Laundry
The laundry has coin operated washing machines and dryers ($1 per wash), and ironing facilities.

Study Room/Library
The House has a small study room/library with a range of reading materials with online access to the main campus library.

Television Rooms
There are two television rooms in the House both with video facilities, cable and free to air TV.

Log Cabin
The House's Log Cabin in the Belanglo State Forest , NSW, is available for residents' use when it is not already reserved for organised activities. The cabin has comfortable basic furniture and fittings including bunk beds and solar hot water.

House Bus
Residents who qualify as registered drivers can access the International House minibus for group trips. Regular tours by residents and alumni are taken to the Royal National Park for short stays at the International House log cabin.

Car Park
International House has a small car park which provides residents with spaces for cars and motorbikes. Motorbikes may be parked at International House but may not be driven or permitted on the University of Sydney campus. There are bicycle racks for push bikes.

Activities
Our activities programme is largely the work of the International House Members Association [IHMA]. Its activities include cultural clubs, language classes, dancing, aerobics, music groups, sports, visits to rural NSW and other Australian States, discos, inter-floor games, Opera House season tickets, the Food Fair, International Night, Harbour Cruise and International House Ball.

Language Classes
The House hosts English classes each week during semester held by the International Student Services Unit (ISSU). This is available to residents in the House as well as students enrolled at the University of Sydney. The House may also provide other language classes to groups of interested residents.
