Greg Fernance, BEc MCom (PropDev), Head of Investment and Capital Management

Greg was appointed to the position of Director of the Investment and Capital Management Office in January 2005, following an extensive career in the private sector spanning more than 20 years. During the mid-1990s he was Head of the Australian Fixed Interest Division of AMP Investments Pty Ltd. In 1998, Greg moved across to the Private Equity Division of AMP Investments where he spent several years as a Director within the investment banking team. Since joining the University in 2003, he has fulfilled a number of roles including that of Manager of Private Equity and Commercialisation. Greg is chairman of the Asset/Liability Committee, a member of the Gift Advisory Board and an integral part of the Investment and Commercialisation Committee (a committee of Senate).

Michael Rook, BEc LLB, Manager Investment Markets

Michael was appointed to the position of Manager Investment Markets in August 2004. He has more than 15 years’ experience in investment markets, with direct exposure to the management of all major domestic and international asset classes. This includes six years as fixed interest portfolio manager for a listed Australian general insurance group, with investments in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, the UK and the US. More recently Michael successfully completed consulting engagements with the NSW racing industry and NRMA Motoring and Services. Michael is a member of the Asset/Liability Committee.

Andrew Batsakis, BCom LLB (Hons) GDipAppFin (Finsia), Manager External Investments

Andrew joined the Investment and Capital Management team in mid-2006. He began his career at Westpac Institutional Banking as a Corporate Foreign Exchange dealer and treasury risk consultant. Andrew worked previously as a lawyer at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, and has taught law at the University of Queensland. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA. He has also recently attended the Foundation and Endowment Asset Management program at the London Business School. Andrew is the secretary of the Asset/Liability Committee and a member of the Gift Advisory Board.

Michael Good, BCA (Victoria, NZ) FINSIA MICD AAII, Director Commercial Subsidiaries

Over 40 years experience in the financial industry with a focus on investment management in Australia and New Zealand. He had extensive board member experience cumulating as the CEO of an Investment Management company with responsibility for over $10 billion of assets. Michael was a member of The University of Sydney Investment and Commercialisation Committee from 2004 and 2007, on retirement from business. He then became an adviser to the investment management team. His role is to be a representative for the University on the many commercial entities owned and have oversight where the University has a commercial interest. He participates as a board member for seven entities, is on three committees and oversees investments in a further 20 companies.

Dr Jon Glass, BSc (Hons) PhD Cantab, Investment Consultant

Jon started with the Investment and Capital Management team in February 2009. He has worked in financial markets for over 25 years in several different areas. This includes stockbroking, investment management and asset consulting. One of his previous roles involved setting up and maintaining a global research effort inside an investment management company.

In a former life he was a Pure Mathematician specialising in algebraic geometry. He has continued his involvement with education by working on several committees within the investment world.

His work with the Investment and Capital Management team involves special projects.

David Sault, BA MBA MAppFin CPA, Director of Finance, Treasury and Investments

David joined the Investment and capital Management team in mid-2007 and currently holds the position of Director of Finance – Treasury and Investments. David has more than 20 years experience as a finance professional covering diverse areas of compliance, risk management and treasury activities for major corporations. This includes periods as CFO and Finance Director. David is the secretary of the Investment and Commercialisation Committee, a committee of Senate, a member of the Gift Advisor Board and the Asset/Liability Committee, and an active member of several internal governance/review committees.


Property Portfolio Management and Student Housing

David Bennett, Associate Director Portfolio Properties

A highly qualified property fund manager with 18 years experience in major unlisted and listed property funds. Roles included General Manager Hooker Property Trusts, Fund Manager ISPT No 1 and Manager CPS Investa. Major strengths in management, selection, divestment and development of most forms of real estate. Additional investment management and superannuation experience gained as a financial services manager with Westpac Investment Services.

David has gained his most recent experience in the University & Higher Education sector with the University of Sydney following his appointment in May 2002. As Associate Director Portfolio Properties, he has responsibility for acquisition, divestment, management and leasing of properties for the University. The management portfolio includes student accommodation, commercially operated farms, telco’s and commercial properties.
