1. A current and recent institutional learning and teaching plan or strategy that is publicly available on the University's website. This new plan (2007-2010) has been widely consulted through the Academic Board Learning & Teaching Committee, the Provost's Academic Strategy Group, and the ITL Strategic Working Groups. It forms the structure for Faculty Learning and Teaching Plans. Progress against these two levels of Plans are reported and progress reports are placed on the Web on the Learning & Teaching Website.
2. Evidence of systematic support for professional development in learning and teaching for sessional and full-time academic staff.

The 3 day Principles & Practice of University Teaching and Learning forms part of the University's confirmation process for the appointment of continuing academic staff.

A university teaching qualification (Graduate Certificate in Higher Education) is available free of charge to all university staff.  Some faculties (eg Faculty of Veterinary Science) have made completion of this one year part time  Graduate Certificate compulsory for new members of staff levels B-C.

All new research higher degree supervisors are required to complete the supervision development program.

In addition to the University-wide programs listed, several faculties have specific teaching and learning development programs: for instance faculty programs for tutor development. Centre for Innovation in Professional Health Education and Research (CIPHER), Office of Learning and Teaching in Economics & Business, and the Pharmacy Education Unit (PEU).

3. Evidence of probation and promotion practices and policies which include effectiveness as a teacher.

To be promoted, a staff member must demonstrate sustained achievements at the current level of appointment in 3 categories of activity - teaching, research and service. There are clear criteria and standards specified in relation to teaching at level of appointment.

Teaching and Learning is a Key Performance Area in the University's Performance Management and Development procedures.

The PMD process applies to all academic staff on probation. A satisfactory PMD must be obtained to meet probation requirements. A satisfactory PMD requires the academic on probation to meet requirements for all key performance areas (KPAs) for the previous 12 months. Teaching and Learning is one of the 4 KPAs.

4. Evidence of systematic student evaluation of teaching and subjects that informs probation and promotion decisions for academic positions.

The Promotions Information Package outlines the requirements for the Teaching Portfolio. Staff are required to demonstrate appropriate use of student evaluation and feedback.
