Teaching Improvement Fund (TIF)

Aim

TIF provides additional resources to enable faculties and colleges to address areas for improvement identified in Academic Board reviews, and University and faculty-level strategic plans.

In 2006 TIF will be replaced by the Teaching Improvement and Equipment Scheme (TIES).

Budget

TIF funding is distributed to faculties as an allocated fund. The TIF fund has two components. There is a central component from Operating Grant money, distributed to Colleges in proportion to their undergraduate and postgraduate coursework load (1.5%); which is augmented by the Colleges, on the basis of 1% of the current year's income from full-fee paying students, including International students.

For 2006, the indicative amounts are:

  • College of Health Sciences (CHS) - $346,000
  • College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) - $664,200
  • College of Sciences and Technology (CST) - $322,000

Colleges are responsible for distributing TIF monies to faculties, in consultation with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning).

Criteria

In 2005 the criteria for awarding Teaching Improvement Fund are:

  • Projects aligned with faculty recommendations of Academic Board Phase 1 and 2 Reviews, and/or
  • Projects aligned with faculty Teaching and Learning Plans, and/or
  • Projects involving benchmarking or alliances for learning and teaching improvement, and/or
  • Projects with a cross-faculty or croos-school or cross-department focus

These criteria are framed around the key goal areas of Strategic Directions 2005-2010, faculty strategic plans and areas of strategic significance for the Learning and Teaching Portfolio. Thus TIF funding for projects will directly contribute to University quality improvement priorities identified by the academic community.
