Session 8.2: Do second chance assessments drive student learning?

Vella, G.J., Cathers, I.R. and Lingard, J.M.

The transition to tertiary education can be difficult for many students, and early assessment in first year units of study pose particular problems for many students negotiating this change. We have implemented a system whereby students get a ‘second chance’ at the material examined in the mid-semester exam. Students are retested on this first section of work in the end-semester exam. If their performance for the re-tested material is improved compared to their original attempt, then the improved mark is used to replace the initial poorer mark in the mid-semester exam.

The system provides several benefits, including some additional time for first year transitional adjustments and a strong incentive to consolidate the early material. This has positive effects on student results and perceptions, and should result in deeper learning.
