WELCOME TO THE LAW EXTENSION COMMITTEE

The Law Extension Committee was established by the Senate of the University of Sydney in 1964 and has been teaching for over 40 years. The Committee's function is to provide legal education for students undertaking the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board Diploma in Law examinations.

The Committee is appointed by the University Senate and comprises members and nominees proposed by the University, the Chief Justice of New South Wales, The NSW Bar Association and Law Society, and the Faculty of Law. Lectures are given by practitioners and university teachers. Weekend Schools are offered each semester for external students.

The aim of the Committee is to provide affordable and accessible legal education in support of the Board's Diploma in Law course. The program is not able to offer all the services and individual attention of a comprehensive campus, however through our webcampus we endeavour to provide additional support and materials to aid students in their studies. This course requires students to manage their time efficiently to meet all requirements and to be able to work independently. There is a strong orientation towards education for legal practice.

Prospective students should visit the future students section for more information about the Diploma in Law program and visit the LPAB website for information on how to register as a Student-at-Law.

LEC WEBCAMPUS

The Law Extension Committee has expanded all of our WEBCAMPUS facilities and all students enrolled in the course are given access to online registration, change of details, subject guides, notes and supplementary materials, subject discussion forum, secure assignment lodgement and receipting, assignment processing and results screen. This facility is constantly growing as we expand our services.

The language skills course will be run again this session for those of you interested in improving your writing skills. No legal research is required. These passages are then marked in detail, correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation and any problems with the logical progression of your argument . There is then a final class at the second weekend school. Please note that the course is not designed to teach English as a second language, but to assist you to write clearly, grammatically, and with precision.

If you are interested in attending and would like to do some initial reading, I recommend you look at either:

Perfect Grammar, by Dr Derek Soles, ISBN: 978-1-84285-136-4,
Or Grammar Guide, by Gordon Jarvie, 2nd edition. ISBN: 978-0-7136-8187-1

Both of these are usually available from Abbey's Bookshop and the Coop Bookshop.

PLEASE NOTE: This course should not be confused with Legal Institutions Topic 6 Introduction to Language Skills. Students studying Legal Institutions will have an introductory lecture on Sunday morning at the next weekend school, but are welcome to participate in this course if they wish.
